Here are some reasons to consider consigning as a group: 1. Auction Barns can advertise that your cattle are coming that day, and list in detail what cattle are consigned for that sale. This can be good for your consignors, and also shows value to your cattle group. Lining it up is seen as one of the services the NWBP does for its members. 2. You could organize and share hauling costs, to get the cattle to the auction at the lowest cost for your members. This can be rather formal, using specific truckers, or it can be simply pooling of rides within the group. The idea is to reduce costs for all, as well as save some time. 3. Frequently, the larger the sale, the better sale there is on all of the cattle. This can particularly be true for smaller sale lots of calves, where the buyers are buying to fill out loads of like kind cattle. 4. Generates visibility for your beef producer group. The larger the numbers, the more power the group represents. 5. Option- If you can agree to common practices, your group can add value for all members. Example- agree to vaccinate with the same vaccines, on about the same dates, all weaned at least 45 days, poured, castrated, dehorned. As feeder cattle get more expensive, we see buyers who simply won’t take on the risk of buying unvaccinated calves, so buyer support isn’t as deep for those type cattle. Once you have done the preconditioning, most can use them. 6. Option- If there are like or similar genetics, the same can be promoted just as the pre-conditioning process described in 5. For instance, if you have a larger group of calves consigned by several sellers, that have quite similar and high quality genetics, that typically has value to the buyer.
